A newspaper article reads "Mrs Spencer of 64 Brookland Road, Old Swan, has received word that her husband , Private H.A.R Spencer of the 9th Kings Liverpool regiment, has been killed in action "Somewhere in France". Private Westerley, who before joining the forces was employed with Private Spencer at the Green Lane Depot of the Liverpool Corporation Tramways, writes:
'I am writing these few lines to you to break the sad news about Harry. While pounding along the trench at night to go to the firing line, a sniper's bullet caught him in the temple, and he was killed on the spot. He was very well liked by the boys of 7 platoon, and we feel his loss very keenly, and our sympathy goes out to you'.
 
Private Spencer was well known in the Old Swan district as he has served for some considerable time as driver and conductor on the corporation tramways, and was a general favourite amongst his fellow workmen at Green Lane Depot.

The service records for Harry have survived. He enlisted for 4 years with the Kings Liverpool Regiment on 9th February 1910, giving his age as 20 years and 8 months, occupation as a cleaner with Liverpool Corporation, and address of 25A St Oswalds Street, Liverpool. He is 5 feet 5 1/2 inches tall with a chest measurement of 35 1/2 inches. His eyesight and physical Development are listed as good. His place of birth is Macclesfield.
 
Harry undertakes preliminary training from 9th Febuary 1909 until 31st October 1909. He is in Caerwys, wales, Leaton, Shrewsbury and Kirkham, Lancashire during his 4 years service. On 9th February 1913 he signs on for a further year at Liverpool. Then on 9th February 1914 he re-enlists at Liverpool for war service. All the time Harry is with the 9th Battalion Kings Liverpool and has the service number 1023.

War details have not survived for Harry, though a letter to his wife Amy listing his belongings to be returned to her is included. Sadly, Harry was killed in action on 13th October 1915 while serving with his regiment in France.

The service records for Herbert have survived. He enlisted at Liverpool on 11th November 1914, giving his age as 19 years and 2 months, and his occupation as a Clerk. He is 5 feet 3½ inches tall, weighs 108 pounds, with a chest measurement of 35 inches. His eyes are grey, hair brown, and he has a mole to the left of his abdomen. His next of kin is listed as his father William Wainwright of 21 Balmoral Road, Fairfield, Liverpool.

A 1919 document list Herbert's parents as William and Fanny Augustin Wainwright of 21 Balmoral Road, Liverpool. A brother William Henry aged 30 is living at 2 Drummond Road, Hoylake, Cheshire. 3 sisters are recorded as Alice May Wainwright 31 and Frances Mabel Wainwright 23 of 21 Balmoral Road. Also Lilian Winifred Papworth of 76 Derby Lane, Old Swan, Liverpool.
 
Herbert trains in the UK then on 6th November 1915 he sails from Folkstone for France. On 4th April 1916 he is awarded 5 days Field Punishment Number 1 for being absent from camp from 8pm 31st March to 6.30 pm 1st April 1916. Herbert is in action on 31st July 1916 when he receives a shot gun wound to his hand and is admitted to hospital. He is discharged on 23rd August 1916 and the following day he joind the base depot at Etaples, France before proceeding to rejoin his regiment on 14th September 1916. Sadly just a few weeks late Herbert is killed in action on 24th November 1916. Herbert was awarded the 1914-1915 Star, The British War Medal and The Victory Medal.

The service records have survived for William. He enlisted in Liverpool before the war began on 14th April 1913 as Private 2671 with the 2/10th (Scottish) Battalion King's Liverpool Regiment. He is aged 17 years and 6 months on enlistment, 5 feet 6 inches tall, weighs 130 pounds and has a chest measurement of 35 inches. His vision and physical development are listed as good, and his occupation is a Clerk with the firm Simmonds Hunt. William's next of kin is his father John Waugh of 11 Childwall Priory Road, Broadgreen, Liverpool.

Also noted at enlistment is that William had served 2 years as a cadet. A 1919 Army document lists his father as John Waugh at the same address as above, his mother is by then deceased. Also at the home address are William's two sisters Anne Mary 30 and Gladys 26. A brother Robert James Waugh aged 28 is serving with the forces.
 
William trains with his regiment and serves in the UK until 10th March 1915 when he leaves from Southampton for France. Nothing else is listed about his service until June 1915 when William is in action. An American infantry casualty list sadly confirms that William was killed in action on 16th June 1915.
 
William was awarded the 1914-1915 Star, The Victory Medal and The British War Medal.

The service records for Joseph have survived. He enlisted at Liverpool on 1st September 1914, giving his age as 19 years and 45 days, and his occupation as a Clerk. He is 5 feet ten inches tall, weighs 158 pound with a chest measurement of 37½ inches. His compexion is fair, hair Brown and eyes Brown. Joseph's next of kin is listed as his father Joseph Henry Webb of 111 Ampthill Road, Aigburth, Liverpool. His mother is Sarah Ann of the same address. No brothers or sisters are listed.

Joseph trained with his regiment and on 7th November 1915 he left for France. Nothing is listed about his war service apart from that he was wounded in action and returned to the UK on 22nd April 1918. He was admitted straight to Whipps Cross War Hospital in Leytonstone, North East London.
 
The medical report shows that Joseph was admitted with a gun shot wound to his thigh. There was a gangrenous discharge coming from the wound and the thigh was swollen with a greenish coloration of the skin that had reached the knee joint. Joseph also had a wound to his left hand. On the 23rd April the thigh became more swollen and the discharge had reached the knee. Sadly on the 24th April Joseph died at 3pm at Whipps Cross Hospital. His body was returned to Liverpool where he was laid to rest at Toxteth Park Cemetery.

The service records for Charles have survived. He enlisted before the start of the war on 14th April 1914 at Liverpool, giving his age as 23 years and 3 months. He is 5 feet 5 inches tall with a chest measurement of 37½ inches. His vision is good as is his physical developement. Charles gives his address as 2 Sandstone Road, Stoneycroft, Liverpool, and his occupation as a Rope Maker at the nearby Garnock and Bibby Rope Factory.

Charles stays with his regiment until 11th March 1915 when he sails for France. Sadly just a few weeks later he dies from wounds received in action on 13th April 1915. The records hold no more details.
