The service records have survived for Michael. He enlisted at Liverpool on 28th December 1914, giving his age as 36 years and 9 months and his occupation as a Farrier. He is 5 feet 2 1/2 inches tall, weighs 136 pounds, and has a chest measurement of 38 1/2 inches. Michael is listed as having false teeth. He gives his next of kin as his wife Martha of 499 Prescot Road, Old Swan, Liverpool. Two children are listed for Michael and Martha, James born 19/09/1912 and Michael born 22/04/1914.

Michael's signature on his enlistment papers

A reference from Michael's employers at 111 Arundel Avenue, Liverpool, list him as working for them as a Shoeing Smith from 1900 up to his Army enlistment. They consider him very reliable and a first rate Shoeing Smith.

The service records for Michael are very slim on detail. In fact there was a real confusion as to where he had served, with the Army finding no records of him serving in France. His wife Martha wrote to them and told them that Michael had returned home on leave on 18th September 1915 after 9 months service in France. He had returned to France on 23rd September and after about four or five weeks he had been transfered to Egypt.

A later Army records shows that Michael sailed aboard the "Ultamatia" from Southampton on 18th January 1915, arriving in Havre, France the same day. After home leave he returned to France and on 25th October 1915 he left Marseilles, France for Egypt, arriving in Alexandria on the 20th October. He remained there until 22 November 1915 when he sailed for Salonika where he landed on 28th November.

No other records survive and nothing is known about Michael's time in Salonika apart from a document that notes his death. On 26th December 1915 Michael was missing from Camp and a search for him took place. He was found face down in a stream after falling from a cliff edge. Full details can be read in the report below.

Document reporting Michael's death

It is probable that Michael had celebrated Christmas with a few drinks and after visiting friends at their camp had lost his way back to his own camp. Sadly his fall from the cliff had caused him to land or stumble into the stream. The army investigated the matter until 1917, concluding that Michael had died from concussion followed by suffocation, resulting from a fall by misadventure.

You can see from the letter below that they refused Martha a pension for herself and the two children as Michael's death had not been during military duty. However on 23rd July 1916 Martha was awarded a pension of 17/6.

LAWRENCE REDMOND

No CWGC record is listed for Lawrence. However his pension records are available.

Lawrence signed up on 16th December 1914 in Liverpool, joining the King's Liverpool Regiment with the service number 23649. He gave his age on enlistment as 21 years, his address as 416 Prescot road, Stanley, Liverpool and his occupation as a Clerk. Lawrence was born in Liverpool and is single. He is 5 feet 3 inches tall, weighs 130 pounds, and has a chest measurement of 35 inches. His complexion is Dark, eyes Hazel and hair Brown. The records note that he has slight flat feet. His next of kin is given as his mother Frances Isabella Redmond of 416 Prescot Road.

Signature of Lawrence on his enlistment papers

Lawrence is posted as a Private with the 17th Service Battalion, King's Liverpool regiment. In January 1915 he is given a weeks home leave, returning to his barracks at Prescot on 15th January 1915 Lawrence falls ill with a severe head cold and is admitted to hospital in Southport. His Battalion leaves for France and Lawrence is left behind. He is then posted to the Depot on 7th May 1915 before another posting to the 3rd King's Liverpool on 20th July 1915. Then on 4th August 1915 he is posted to the 21st Reserve Battalion, King's Liverpool regiment. He is appointed unpaid Lance Corporal on 20th March 1916.

Lawrence is given leave 3 weeks home leave in March 1916. He returns to his regiment at Formby camp on 1st April 1916 and is immediately sent to a field hospital at Altcar for the next 10 days due to him coughing up Phlegm. He is then transfered to the VAD hospital in Southport.

Lawrence remains very ill and a medical officer looks at his case. He writes in his report on Lawrence.

"Symptons started in January 1915. Severe cold in head and on chest, when he was off duty at home for one week. Afterwards he was left behind for home service, at which he continued until April 1st 1916 suffering from cough and irritability of throat during the whole time from outset until April 1st 1916, when he went home for 3 weeks. Returning to his regiment at Formby camp and being sent immediately to Altcar hospital for 10 days, and then onto VAD haspital, Southport. Suffering from phlegm in cough, night sweats and weight loss. Present weight 7 stone 12 pounds, He says his weight on enlistment (Dec 1914) was over 10 stone"

The rest of the writing is hard to read. but the doctor diagnoses pulmonary tuberculosis. He also states that Lawrence should be discharged and should recieve an Army pension as his original infection is permanent. In his opinion he will be unable to work in civilian life within the next 12 months and long term will depend on how his chest reacts.

On 21st June 1916 at Preston, Lawrence is discharged from service as unfit for Military duty and returns home to Liverpool. His age at discharge is recorded as 22 years and 6 months, and his character as very good. It is probable that his mother Francis nursed him when he returned back home. Sadly Lawrence passes away in Liverpool in the second quarter (April-June) 1917.

The Stanley Pork shop

The Stanley Pork shop was located between Gidlow road and Herrick street, and close to St Anne's church. The lady in the doorway is Lawrence's mother Frances Isabella Redmond who ran the shop. It is not known if Lawrence is one of the boys in the picture. 1911 Census. 416 Prescot Road, Stanley, Liverpool.
Frances Isabella (mother) 45, Pork Butcher, Widowed, born Sheffield, Yorkshire. Children Lawrence 17, Assisting Pork Butcher, John 16, Assisting Pork Butcher, Walter 12. All children born in Liverpool. Also listed Charlotte Love 70 (mother of Frances, Grandmother of Lawrence) born Isle of Man, Elizabeth Ann Love 32 (sister of Frances, Aunt of Lawrence) born Liverpool. And Charles Keitel 27 Pork Butcher ( no relation ) born Germany.

1901 Census. 25 Makin Street, Walton, Liverpool.
Lawrence J (father) 44, Cooper, born Ireland, Frances I (mother) 35, born Sheffield. Children Lawrence 7, John 6, Walter 2. All children born in Liverpool.

Lawrence Redmond (father) died 1912 in Liverpool aged 55.

I thought it would be interesting to try and find out what happened to Charles Keitel at the outbreak of war as he was born in Germany. With the help of others I have found a few details for him. August the 4th 1912 Charles married Lena Conrad at St Saviour's church in Breckfield Road. They are both living at Lena's parents home 277 Breck Road in Liverpool. Charles is still a Pork Butcher and so is Lena's father George, Lena's mother is also called Lena. So Charles is moving in the circles of his profession. Charle's father is listed as Michael, a Tanner by trade, and Lawrence Redmond (Soldier listed above) is listed as a witness to the marriage meaning Charles and Lawrence must have been good friends. I do wonder if they are the two young men in the photo above? But we have no way of telling. In 1913 a son is born to the couple named Charles C Keitel.

After this nothing can be found, what happened to them we can only guess. Did Charles return to Germany to join the army? I would doubt this very much. He had been living in England and married an English woman ( she may have been from a German family ) so why would he fight the English? He could easily have changed his name to something like Kettle or Keats so as to avoid the growing anger towards German people living here. Then of course he is part of the Pork Butcher profession and they may have helped him change his name completely or help him and his family move away to a area were nobody would have know Charles was born in Germany. He may have been intered by the British as an alien. This is all assumption and we can only guess. Hopefully one day details will turn up of just what happened to the family.

Charles William Hogg was 18 when he watched the 1915 May anti German riots stemming from the sinking of the Lusitania in Liverpool. He witnessed the attack on the Conrad Premises at 277 Breck Road and remembered how a grand piano was pushed out of an upstairs window. Nearly all the German Pork Butchers were attacked along with Germans following other trades like Charles Bobby and family who were pub licensees. At this time Charles Hogg's grandmother took the Bobby children to stay in their home.

From this report we know that the Conrad shop/home was attacked. Charles and his family would have had to flee, but where too? Was it out of the city or the country? Did they get help in Liverpool? The Redmond family who ran the Stanley Pork shop may have helped them. As the Conrad premises were attacked in May 1915 was George Conrad also of German birth? I can find no record for a marriage between him and his wife Lena.

At the start of WW1 75% of the Pork Butcher shops in Liverpool were run by German families, at the end of the war there were no German butchers remaining. Many had been rounded up along with other Germans working and living here and sent to alien camps on the Isle of Man, later many were returned to Germany. Others we know were helped by friends from the communities that they had become such a part of.

A Frederick Michael Keitel from Germany,a resident in Rothwell Yorkshire ,was given his naturalisation certificate in 1908. On died 26th December 1937 Frederick died at of Commercial Road Rothwell Yorkshire. Probate of £12249 5s 11d was granted in London to. John Edward Graves General dealer and Christian Rhon pork butcher. In 1901 at 88 Commercial Street, Rothwell, Yorkshire. Frederick is listed as a Shopkeeper/Pork Butcher. Born Kroffenbach,Germany. Also living at the addres is 17 year old Christian Rohn, an apprentice Pork Butcher, born Zimmern, Germany. A marriage from 1932 in Wakefield list John E Graves and Alice Keitel. Is there a connection between Charles Keitel in Liverpool and Frederick Keitel in Yorkshire? They were both born in Germany, they were both Pork Butchers, it is very possible that they were also related.
